According to the information from Ontario Ginseng Association, the sandy soil of the Norfolk plain is perfect for panax quinquefolius, or North American ginseng as its known to most of its buyers.
Ontario is North America’s largest grower of ginseng, with over 140 growers and over 5,000 acres in cultivation. About three million pounds of root were harvested in 2003. Ontario wasn’t always the leader in this industry. Until a few years ago, Wisconsin was the heavyweight, but its soils are not as well-suited to this crop, so root rot has set in, among other diseases. British Columbia grows a fair bit, but its harvest has been declining as well. It all makes sense when you consider that ginseng is native to Ontario, discovered here in the 1700’s by Jesuit priests who then begin to look for uses for the herb.
Ginseng production has been increasing over the last 25 years, as the government’s support of tobacco has been declining. Ginseng is a capital intensive crop, and a risky one, since there is no crop insurance, and no crop to harvest for the first four years. Ginseng root is harvested after four and five years, cleaned, dried and stored in barrels until it is sold. Harvesting has improved enormously with mechanical harvesters, allowing hand-sorting on the machines that are digging the roots. Much of the ginseng production process, however, is still people-intensive.
At least 80 percent is sold to the Asian market overseas, where it is shipped, processed and often shipped back as tea, pills and other products. China, the largest market for Ontario’s North American ginseng, has been buying both root and seed, in order to build its own industry, hoping to replace ours eventually. That is a challenge the industry is preparing for through researching new uses in order to develop new markets.
North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is a perennial plant in the ivy family that is native to eastern North America and has a long history of use by the Native North Americans. Because of its adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, cardiovascular, and energy-boosting effects, it is one of the most popular herbs incorporated into Traditional Chinese Medicine.
North American ginseng has been widely studied and has been shown to have several beneficial effects. It has been shown to promote the regulation of blood sugar levels in diabetics and is successful in preventing influenza infection in the elderly. It has also been studied for its ability to enhance libido and sexual performance, although the exact mechanism of action is not yet understood. Recently, the University of Hong Kong identified North American ginseng as having anti-inflammatory effects as well.
