A Tale of Two Herbs - Ginseng and Sanqi
Why American Ginseng and Sanqi complement each other so well?
For thousands of years, health practitioners in China have relied on San Qi (also called Radix Pseudoginseng and Panax Notoginseng) to treat and support recovery from a wide range of health conditions. This traditional herb is so revered that the 1578 Compendium of Materia Medica (the most complete and comprehensive medical book ever written in the history of traditional Chinese medicine) referred to San Qi as “more precious than gold.”

The variety and contents of ginsenosides in American Ginseng are lower than Korean Ginseng and Chinese Ginseng. However, research implies that American Ginseng can provide the strengthening and immune-enhancing effects of Asian ginseng without over-stimulation as it contains higher levels of ginsenoside Rb1, which has a sedative effect on the central nervous system. Therefore, it is more suitable for the young, middle-aged and stressed. In TCM, American Ginseng is considered a Yin-tonic that is cooling, Qi-tonifying, yet non-stimulating.
